So I thought I’d return to my blog with a little more flavor as to who Doug Lang is. One of the things I really enjoy are advertisements. I like all ad’s - TV, Radio, Print, Web, etc… (I think that about covered all the mediums). There’s almost no rhyme or reason just as long as they don’t suck.
What constitutes suckyness? I don’t know - thats a hard one to define. Maybe its a lack of creativity or follow thru on a message. It could be bad writing, bad music, terrible tag lines or just a plain old feminine hygiene commercial on network TV during the dinner hour.
So here’s my $0.02 (I hate that the cents symbol is gone!)
“Excuse me how are you reading that” OMG what a terrible opening line. His reaction looks totally forced and her response of “Its a Kindle” is tragic. Followed by the pricing line I feel is an overt “Look at you - you’re stupid for paying so much for an e-reader”.
If I were that guy I’d probably snap back with a little “listen b!%&h I didn’t ask how much it is - at least I have a web browser, email, media….oh yeah color too” The implied comparisons are two drastic. Its like trying to sell people who love steak; chicken nuggets.
I love an iPad slam as much as the next guy, got my toes crossed for an Android tablet, but even this was a stretch. At the end of the day you’re either looking for a computing tablet or just an e-reader - and this commercial doesn’t offer the value proposition to convert one to the other.
Nice try Amazon better luck with a creative firm vs. the STP (same ten people)!
